Goldfields DAMA Transition to WA DAMA: What Regional Employers Should Check Before 1 July 2026

Goldfields DAMA Transition to WA DAMA: What Regional Employers Should Check Before 1 July 2026

DAMA transitions can create practical risk for regional employers if old endorsement pathways and new application settings are treated as the same thing. The transition from the Goldfields DAMA into the broader WA DAMA framework means employers should pause and check which pathway applies to each worker, role, and timing scenario.

Why the transition matters

A DAMA can support workforce planning where local labour shortages are real and documented, but it is not a general shortcut around sponsorship obligations. Employers still need to check role duties, salary, employment terms, concessions, worker eligibility, and documentary evidence. When one DAMA closes or transitions, timing becomes especially important.

Separate old endorsements from new applications

Employers should distinguish between an endorsement already obtained under the older Goldfields arrangement and a new application that may need to proceed under WA DAMA settings. A worker or business may be disadvantaged if the wrong assumption is made about which rules, occupation settings, concessions, or evidence requirements apply.

What employers should review

The first review should cover current workforce needs, each nominated occupation, contract terms, guaranteed earnings, market salary position, work location, labour market evidence, and any concessions being relied upon. The employer should also check whether the intended role still aligns with the duties and business case used in the DAMA request.

Risk points for visa holders

Visa holders should also check timing. A transition between DAMA arrangements can affect whether a worker needs updated documents, whether a new endorsement is required, and whether the employer's sponsorship strategy is still realistic. Workers should avoid relying on informal assurances until the correct pathway is confirmed.

Practical next step

Before 1 July 2026, regional employers should create a worker-by-worker transition checklist. The safest approach is to record which pathway applies, which documents are still current, which assumptions need verification, and which roles require updated advice before lodgement.

Practical planning table

Employer questionDocument to checkRisk if ignored
Is this an old endorsement or a new application?DAMA endorsement records and correspondenceWrong pathway assumptions
Does the role still match the business need?Position description, roster, contract, and organisation chartMismatch between duties and nomination
Are salary and conditions compliant?Salary evidence and workplace recordsSponsorship and workplace-law risk
Is the worker's timing realistic?Visa expiry, skills evidence, English evidence, and dependantsAvoidable delay or loss of options
